The big question now is: What is the best motivation for employees. A HUGE SALARY or JOB SECURITY. From your perspective, Which do you think is the No.1 motivator.
Studies have revealed that most employees who seek jobs pursue two ( 2) motives majorly.
◾ Either a job that pays
◾A job that is stable/secure
Meeting both or either of the needs can guarantee higher productivity, reduced turnover, increased profitability and job satisfaction.
But the big question now is:
what is the best motivation for employees
A HUGE SALARY or JOB SECURITY
From your perspective Which do you think is the No.1 motivator?
In as much that Human wants are INSATIABLE. ( Economics perspective)
Abraham Maslow also talks about the "5 HIERARCHY of needs".(motivation theory) of which 1/3 has been able to attain. The Peak point of one's career.

Everyone aspires to get to the peak of their endeavours, one that promotes learning and development.
"SATISFACTION" is the hallmark of these theories.
Many have been lured into some jobs due to financial benefits and gains yet struggling and grumbling doing the job.
Employers are supposed to always Initiate plans, Engage in good communication to always remind the Employees of how their roles and efforts are tied to the success of the organization.
....and ensure that the career structure promotes advancement at all levels.
Many Employees gets redundant once they perceive that the career structure does not promote learning and advancement in their career.
Everyone has a motive of joining an organization likewise the ORGANIZATIONS too.
Profits and Satisfactions become Paramount and the centre of attention and attraction for both parties.
Satisfaction is quite relative. It could be MONEY OR SECURITY or otherwise.
Many factors might induce your decisions or choice.
Going by Mc Gregory's theory of X and Y
Aside from "Money", some are motivated by other factors which could include Goodwill, recognition, Award etc.
...........................................................
The ongoing COVID-19 has opened the eyes of many as regards the credibility of this topic.
The recent economic situation has shown that no one enjoys REAL job security.
MANY have been retrenched within this period of the Corona outbreak.
The question is who then actually enjoying job security???
Truth be told, In perilous times job security does not count and is not a motivating factor.
Times and seasons are valuable which accounts more for what is valuable or not. In finance (It's the time value of money)
If for instance, we're lost amid a thick forest and someone also in the same situation offers you dollars in place of your gun and other tools. What would be your decision?
Job security to me is an incentive enjoyed in an organization.
The money paid and received is what you have the absolute right to for work done, and the money paid and received should be commensurate to the work done.
I just find it's difficult to separate the two. I just feel They're both meant to be enjoyed in a reputable organization. I wish they're inseparable.
But then, in an economy where Supply(L) is more than demand (L) scarcity possesses the need for choice.
"If you're not a career-oriented person and You don't have any prospects with the company, Job security might not appeal to you".
An entrepreneur or a business person, is looking for where he would hit it big and stand on his own.
Maslow theory talks about the Peak point which can be translated to mean a reasonable Level of Satisfaction.
However, Anything below that point of the peak would make one continue to Aspire and adjust upwards until one attains its peak point.
In the world of work, where compensation for work done is constant. (minimum wage)
However,
Is job security assured? Or
relatively assured?
If job security is relatively assured, all things are equal in an environment that Promote learning and development and gives room for EMPLOYEES to attain their visions, ...
Regardless of the millions, you're also been paid.
Without the secured level of job security and a reasonable level of Satisfaction and Engagement, you might still want to adjust to attain balance in a solid foundation if you're not a risk-taker, not to talk of where there's no room for you to work on your vision and dreams. Of course, job hunting and thereafter resigning is inevitable.
By OBSERVATION most students are academia and career-oriented in the making, just quite a number of us are risk-takers (Business tycoons or lords) I guess we're getting there
I, therefore, advocate for a good career structure that's on a solid FOUNDATION that promotes and give room for learning and development, to plan, Initiate your goals and attain your peak point or career path
If it's possible, a balanced view would be more appropriate. Money with Job security.
....................................
This is a perfect situation we all can ponder over
A works for XYZ Ltd where he is paid #350,000 per month with stable job security. ABC plc. trying to poach B offers him #600,000 per month with no guarantee of Job Security.
What would be your advice for A and why?
This question I would relate to real-life experience.
I know of someone who got a job and was excited about it because he was paid well with good bonuses.
However, over time he begins to perceive that the management is not giving him the needed recognition for his work done and also not giving him time to grow in his ambition. This person is Someone who has the plan of using this money to sponsor his ICAN exams but there's no time for him to concentrate on other things as well as his ICAN Exam.
Secondly, the core of every organization centres around "teamwork". So whenever they want to appraise they would be somehow stylishly saying he's not working.
Of which I think after how we would be working in a team. You will surely know who's more advanced and contributing more.
This guy has been nurturing these things thinking with time things would get better but to no avail. So, he took it upon himself and resigned despite the good pay. But then he has a plan to meet for himself for the next 10years. He has a plan of attaining his ICAN and other plans but has already been foreseen and perceived to have been hindered in a way.
Sadly, He left the company then comes this ongoing pandemic where many had been forcefully retrenched.
Utilizing the effect of the pandemic, Luckily for him, an opportunity for him to explore diverse companies of his choice requesting for entries.
Currently, he's at the final stage at PWC and awaiting some more interviews in other companies.
There's no assurance that those that left a particular due to one reason or the other would ever get a better job. Though some are fortunate. Better days for everyone
Many who are lovers of football would relate well to my next line.
Many players who at one time or the other left a particular club for another due to high pay didn't Account that they would get better over there. Sovertime lost fame and popularity while some who did were still able to maintain their fame.
Nothing is guaranteed, which now boils down to Your Decision about RISK.
PS: Few Months into his aptitude text with PWC. He was later called by the former employer that he should come back and resume work.
When I heard of the story, It's was good to know that he's important to the Organization, so I suggested to him that he should agree with some conditions.
It was kind of nice ...
I quickly told him to request for salary increase.
But then we had to be patient and think.
But while he was taking his time to consider the offer...
We quickly do an investigation into the company...
Why would the company be calling him back....??
Hmm,
interestingly, He had a trusted friend inside the organization.
It was discovered that coming back will mean doing the all jobs from January till date...
Meaning the post and job had been idle and vacant since then...
So it's very important for many of us that love Job security to understand your company policies, structure and vision if it's in tandem with your goals
Of course, there should be mutual benefits.
He's not a staff but was working with the firm on a contract basis. Renewed every year with a mindset of either being retained later or something else.
Of course, Discretion had to be sought for...
My verdict... Solid structure on a strong foundation
Identify companies baits and use ur Management skills
The decision is not something to be rushed into most especially with these private companies.
Let's Be wise in our decisions
JOB SECURITY, A layman view means an incentive to grow with the company to a certain KNOWN period.
And
CAREER STRUCTURE. layman view, It's the standing policies, requirements, prerequisites one must have attained to move to the next level in an organization. It allows you to grow with ORGANIZATIONS.
My points...
There are some Organizations that their career structure and in terms of promotion is very slow while some it very rapid.
Big 4, Top 3 or 4 Consulting firms etc
These are some selected companies that in a space of 10years or thereabout you would be approaching Associate or Manager level heading to partner Level.
In this situation, there's a "JOB SECURITY with PLANNED GROWTH"
You can even envisage the future all things being equal.
Within that few years of working u might land yourself in one of their regional companies or abroad. Because it's a multinational company.
Some have worked for more than 10years and haven't even come close to Associate level or Manger. Not of talk of a prospect of travelling abroad. Because of some policies involved in the system or company. Or Career structure.
Some companies who know your worth would pay you well to their ability to tie you down with no considerable growth.
THE Focus SHOULDN'T be on job security alone. IF Interested in job security, you must also look at the CAREER STRUCTURE.
Companies that don't have a good career structure, incentives, and policies but with good pay later face labour turnover.
The reason is that Some who cant merit these top companies would rather manage and accept the offers not minding the situations while still secretly job hunting in other to utilise the time Garnering work experience and level up.
and build their CV's
Hence,
I ADVOCATE FOR A SOLID FOUNDATION (Job security) TAKING INTO COGNISANT the CAREER STRUCTURE AND POLICIES AND ACCESS IF ITS ONE THAT GIVES ROOM FOR LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT, WITH RIGHT ATTITUDE, INCENTIVES (money) THAT'S IN COMMENSURATE WITH WORK DONE.
