Would you rather work in a startup organization with higher pay or an established multinational organization with lower pay?
In as much that we would want to be quick to conclude that nothing is wrong in the two options. Of course, nothing is outrightly wrong.
However, I think we should make a conscious overview before we leap as there's nothing as bad as starting on a shaky foundation.
Most of these startups can be so smart and cunning as to be using money as a "bait" to keep you in the organization.
They understand to some extent the nature of the market and human behaviours and won't mind incurring a lot of "cost" in the "short-run" to sustain the perceived future.
Of course, many of us know of Opay, Gokada and others.
These are some examples of companies who incurred a lot of cost in the short run to stand the test of time, giving out a lot of promos and free benefits to its customers, yet couldn't make it as government legislations, Management, and other factors affected them greatly and it's employees.
It's a dent and a red flag on your CV hopping from one job to another and the worst part a sack or a gab on your CV.
Most times these startups companies are quick with their decision making and require a lot of stress and hard work from the employees. Anything short of that they sack you and that alone would take a lot to explain and recover from in the labour market. Their policies and culture are not always obvious until you get in.
Everyone desire development and career growth and as such must look closely before making a decision most especially with startups.
Of course, there are some startups with prospects and futures. That shouldn't be looked down upon.
On the other hand, Most multinational companies as a "graduate training" wouldn't pay you much at the instance.
Their confidence reference check and integrity test are evident in this regard
There are instances where most graduates turned down other good offers for multinational companies. What are they thinking? Of course, there's more than meet the eye.
Knowing the situation of the country and the high rate of unemployment, hopping from one job to another would give you experience and that's if it's within a "career path". If otherwise, believe you me, those experiences are not relevant and don't be surprised these employers will tell you bluntly that you don't have a "career path"
Today, 'age' has become a greater determinant in getting jobs especially entry level in most multinationals and other good companies.
Some brilliant minds are still at home because they have wasted time with some of these startups or other similar jobs intending to garner job experiences.
Only if you have a political, economic and social advantage. Exploring and hopping jobs is not a challenge.
Some who studied abroad and have wide connections can always and may want to explore.
All things being equal, this might not work for all in this country Nigeria.
For instance, You see a lot of first-class graduates doing Lecturing jobs and they would still be complaining.
Of course, "When the preferable is not available then the available becomes preferable"
However, Not that the job of lecturing is not good. But some accepted the job despite their First class as there are no better options.
It's better and always safe to find a place with the prospect of growing and building a future.
Just like magic, the world of work has changed dramatically.
Globalization has affected the work structure and the way we work generally
Quite a few are leveraging on these platforms and mind you some of these IT companies have been there since 2016 and was able to make a major turnaround during and after the COVID-19.
It's no more news that the IT space is taking over at a geometric progression disrupting the entire system. It was earlier reported during the COVID-19 that "Nigeria would hit Recession". Just like a nightmare, the only viable option was to utilize the online space and put in measures to curtail the spread.
Everyone desires to reach the peak of their career- Abraham Maslow.
No one in the real sense would want to settle for less.
Of course, Too much work doesn't translate to too much money and that's why the IT space is taking over, pressing the right buttons at the right time.
At some point in our lives after graduating we would receive different opportunities ranging from startups to Multinationals
However, any career and a business oriented person would want to start with a multinational. It's not easy to see opportunities but when You see one...
You Grab it !!!!
Life is about Learning; a permanent change as a result of continuous practice.
The truth is that some of these startups started their learning process somewhere at these multinationals and over the years of conscious and consistent learning from experts, climbing the career ladder has attained the position as either a manager, partner, or external independent partner. Of course, diversifying and setting up a structure for themselves can be envisaged
In Some of these multinational companies if not all, in the next 10yrs you are already a manager They would sponsor your Professional Courses if u meet certain criteria, You can even imagine yourself heading a branch outside the country.
However, from the tech space, More of these multinationals like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Flutter, Pay stack etc would pay handsomely. Why? The company's policies and mode of operation are flexible, and their understanding of the value of their Human Resource is quite commendable!
Most of these startups are looking for a person that can do 4- 5 jobs, diversifying, multitasking and because of what they want to achieve gives employees what they're not competent enough to handle thereby leading to stress, sack, and other issues ( Adjustment stress theory and Peter's principle).
The pay From some of these startups is somewhat cool but how many would pay what's "commensurate" to your Value.
What I don't advocate for is paying more like a "bait" and low to exploit utilizing the country's rate of unemployment.
Underpaying your employees as a multinational is not cool, however, there are some bonuses and benefits later as a career-oriented and forward-looking enthusiast.
Hence,
"What's (are) your career goals"?
Your choices are hinged on your career goals.
