Data bases and data warehouse

Introduction: Information resources are central to any organization’s success. And these resources are growing at an astounding rate. Data stored in digital format are multiplying everywhere on a vast array of physical media, ranging from the organization’s own computers to hosts that might be located anywhere on the planet. People understand that some information is powerful and valuable, but far more is useless junk that should be tossed.  What strategy are there to manage information resources so that what is important is secure, organized, and easily accessible to managers, employees, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders? The Nature of Information Resources:   Information resources can be described as Structured information: This is reasonably ordered; in that it can be broken down into component parts and organized into hierarchies. Unstructured Information: This information has no inherent structure or order, and the parts can’t be easily linked together, except...

Information System and strategy

Introduction: Companies compete for dollar, customers loyalty and attention, and start-ups face huge challenges as they try to develop a strategy that will lead to success.  Whether times are calm or stormy, the reasons companies choose one strategy over another—and how they use information systems to implement them—help explain why some companies succeed and others fail. What strategy, starting with the forces that shape industry competition and help to determine how profitable companies operating in the industry will be? Porter’s five competitive forces:   Based on Porter’s model, the reasons lie with five interrelated forces that influence industry competition.   1) Threat of new entrants : This is the rate and ease at which new start-ups enter into the industry. However, there are some ways used by incumbents to ward off newcomers which includes: Network effects , which refer to the increased value of a product or service that results simply because there are more peo...

Information System and People

Introduction: At the heart of every organization is its information system, Twitter, Microsoft, and Facebook are all popular companies on the cutting edge of technology, and their innovations and competitive battles make front page news.  But even organizations that don’t seem very high tech—from a family owned restaurant to a fitness gym—can hardly do without information systems, or without people who know how to build and manage them. Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, once remarked that he had no idea how many data centers Google actually managed. He might not have known, but his back office information systems certainly did. Information is an organization’s most important asset. Creating, capturing, organizing, storing, retrieving, analyzing, and acting on information are fundamental activities in every organization. Information system is basically how people, technology and processes interact together. Many refer to the field as management information systems (MIS) which de...

Overview and Impact of Celebrated Cases of Industrial Conflict in the workplace

Industrial conflict arises from the unbearable conditions in the workplace. This can be observed from the emergence and growth of Slavery, Feudalism and Capitalism.  The Period of Slavery :  This is characterised by forced labour.  The system of production was based on slavery.  The relation of production was a master-servant relationship.  There was the presence of slave rebellion otherwise called Slave Revolution or insurrection e.g Slave Revolution of Haiti Slave Labour was abolished Emergence of Feudalism The Period of Feudalism : The system of production was based on feudalism. The relation of production was landlord- serfs relationship. CASE STUDY 1- An employee named John made threatening remarks to his supervisor at work . John had a history of being aggressive and threatening to both management and other employees and on this occasion had been challenged for incorrect timekeeping. His Employer on the other hand had not followed the proper process in investigating and determining the appropriate discipline for the employee in any of the previous instances of poor behaviour. The company also did not have the HR documentation such as policies and procedure to support the discipline process. The supervisor made a police complaint and was reluctant to supervise John John’s employer is stuck in between and doesn’t know what to do . If he should dismiss John, it could result in a significant award in favour of John. If John remains in the workplace, the environment would become dysfunctional, difficult to control and manage. *QUESTION* What advise would you give to Johns Employer?

There is usually a condition of service and a code of conduct before employment. So it's already a red flag if they don't give you and a fault if you didn't request for it before employment and understand the terms and conditions of employment before accepting the offer of employment.  This issue is very dicey in the sense that there was no well structured established culture and ethics as well as a documentation system I've heard of a case where an employee is unjustly treated and made a scapegoat at his workplace which led to his immediate voluntary resignation... It's easy to quickly point fingers at him but do you think it's justifiable to nail him for improper timing and bad work ethics? It's glaring that There was no proper procedure and grievance handling mechanism yet he has been nailed and accused of having a bad history and poor work ethic in a company where communication and culture had been undermined or underrated and not considered as a yardsti...

On getting a new job Susan was told by her employer that she would be entitled to a one month paid vacation to any country of her choice after working for 12months. One year later on the job, susan requests for a paid vacation from her employer and was told she's no longer entitled to a paid vacation. Susan have no written document of the entitled vacation . What advice would you give to susan to get her paid vacation?

Well, this situation is very dicey in the sense that the agreement was oral. It's a case of her words against their words which might put her on the losing side. So to get her vacation might be a long shot. I've heard of a case where an employee is unjustly treated and made a scapegoat at his workplace which led to his immediate voluntary resignation. On that fateful day, he was called on the phone to give quick feedback to one of their clients. However, on getting to the office his boss started yelling at him, and was like who told you, why did you have to respond to our client that way? Perhaps he may have forgotten that he was the one that instructed him to do so. Though the employee's reaction of resigning may have sounded conditioned, but not everyone can handle yelling. Sometimes ago when I finished my Exams I began having symptoms of malaria. When I went to the medical centre I was given some drugs which I took but it worsened the situation. When I went back to compl...

Health, Safety and Security in the workplace: A case of an 18years old boy who just finished High school and was working in a factory as a chop saw operator (Wood cutter). Sadly got entangled in a machine called conveyor roller and suffered compressional axphyxia which led to his instant death. Present on the cause and how it could be managed.

There's this popular statement that says: “if you think safety is expensive, why not try an accident” All organizations have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure that the workplace has suitable health and safety measures in place so that everyone who works or visits is protected from any harm.  This involves creating health and safety policies and programs and ensuring everyone is well educated so that they can adhere to the policies with ease. However, if you tune your Radio/Tv or check online you will see different reported cases of workplace accidents.  Despite the legislations, the ILO framework and even the health and safety Act of 1974, and others,  accidents have never ceased to occur at the workplace. Though not peculiar to a particular country. It is a universal phenomenon. The world of work has changed dramatically. Globalization has affected  the structure of workplaces, the way work is performed, and occupational safety and health  An est...
